Ever since a frozen mammoth carcass was discovered in Siberia in the early 1800s, children and adults alike have been fascinated by the “Ice Age” and the supersized mammals that dominated the Earth during the Pleistocene. The success of the Ice Age movies has brought the wide appeal of this era and its creatures to the forefront of contemporary pop culture.

Now, join the stars of the Ice Age films — Manny the woolly mammoth, Sid the sloth, and Diego the saber-toothed cat — on an Ice Age adventure across North America as they make their way north to their home in the Mammoth Steppe. Discover the remarkable diversity of the large mammals that once thrived on the North American continent. Become a Pleistocene sleuth using 21st-century technology to investigate clues left by the past that provide evidence of the mammoths, mastodons, giant ground sloths, giant bison, and other huge animals of the “American Serengeti.” Explore a world that disappeared just over 10,000 years ago.

As you accompany the three friends through a series of immersive ice-age ecosystems, each themed in its own distinct colors and featuring specific science topics and Pleistocene inhabitants, you’ll use an Ice Age Adventure journal to keep track of where you’ve been and what you’ve learned. Record your findings at interactives throughout the exhibition. At home, use the journal to log onto the official website and explore links to other sites that will extend your exhibition experience. Interactives will range from state-of-the-art multi-touch technology to actual objects that you can handle and manipulate. In each gallery, find out about ice-age discoveries in different parts of the world, as well as fossils unearthed by ordinary people.
